India's electricity demand in the first half of 2021 only increased by 3% from the level in the first half of 2019. According to a new report from London-based research institute Ember, among the developing countries in Asia, India has one of the countries with the lowest increase in electricity demand during the pandemic. All In One Solar Power System Solar and wind energy met 72% of India's electricity demand growth, but coal-fired power generation also increased by 4%, thus filling the remaining demand gap and offsetting the decline in hydropower generation. The final result was almost restored to its peak in 2018 level. These figures give India a picture that surpasses other Asian countries, because many Asian countries have a much larger share of coal and other fossil fuel sources in meeting the growing demand for electricity in the first six months of this year.

For example, Bangladesh relies almost entirely on fossil fuels to meet the growth in electricity demand. In addition to Bangladesh, Pakistan is the only Asian country that has not increased wind and solar power generation despite the increase in power demand.

While India’s coal power generation only increased by 4%, but the subsequent increase in carbon dioxide emissions made it a "grey recovery country." This refers to a country's significant increase in electricity demand, which is met by wind and solar energy, but is also supplemented by the increase in coal power generation, which leads to an increase in carbon dioxide emissions from the power sector.
