The Sudanese Ministry of Energy in Africa announced that according to a memorandum of understanding signed by representatives of the governments of Sudan and the United Arab Emirates, Sudan may become the site of up to 500 megawatts of new solar powered homes solar power plants.

The Ministry of Energy stated that the UAE will build and operate these solar power plants in Sudan through one of its companies for a period of 20 years, while the Sudanese government has promised to purchase its electricity at a competitive price during the contract period.
The statement also revealed that the solar project will train and hire Sudanese workers during the construction and operation stages, but no other details were released.
It is understood that the agreement between the UAE and Sudan was reached a few days after the Abu Dhabi Development Foundation (ADFD) stated that it had provided USD 556.6 million in currency, financing and other forms of support to Sudan. The aid is part of the UAE’s $1.5 billion grant pledge to Sudan.

In April 2019, the UAE approved US$1.5 billion in aid to Sudan to help this African country support its economic development and financial stability.
It is reported that the ongoing economic crisis in Sudan has led to insufficient investment in infrastructure. At present, Sudan still has power outages every day, and most areas of the country are not connected to the grid.
